Treatment in your own country, together with the doctors in Cuba

When a patient's health does not allow travel to Cuba, treatment can, in suitable cases, be started in the patient's own country under the supervision of their own doctor. This route is possible in many countries around the world: the doctors in Cuba follow the process together with the local doctor, and our team coordinates every stage.

  1. Joint assessment

The doctors in Cuba and the patient's doctor at home review the file together.

  2. Special transport

Medicines the doctors consider suitable can be shipped under special transport conditions, subject to the import, licensing and permit rules of the destination country.

  3. Treatment with your own doctor

If considered suitable, treatment is started in your country under your own doctor's supervision.

  4. Regular follow-up

Check-ups and test results are shared regularly with the doctors in Cuba, and we are with you at every step.

This route is not suitable for every patient, every treatment or every country. The doctors decide on suitability; shipment depends on the destination country's rules and permit procedures.

Sample flow

This is an example. Times depend on the file and the documents.

How does a file move forward?

  1. Day 1

The patient or a relative applies, uploads the reports and pays the fee.

  2. Day 1

The documents are checked and translated into Spanish.

  3. Day 2

The file reaches the relevant specialist in Havana.

  4. Day 4

The doctor asks for a recent imaging report, and the patient or a relative uploads it in the portal.

  5. Day 6

The doctor's opinion and the treatment options are explained, and the patient or a relative decides without haste.

Eligibility for treatment and the treatment plan are decided by the doctors in Cuba.

At the end of the review

What will you have at the end of the preliminary review?

The hardest part of waiting is not knowing. So we tell you clearly, from the start, what you receive for the fee.

  • The doctor's report

When the specialist in Cuba has written the report on your file, we let you know. You read it in your patient portal.

  • An explanation in your language

We explain the doctor's opinion and the suggested next steps to you in plain English. Your coordinator answers your questions.

  • Treatment options

If the doctor suggests treatment, the options arrive in your portal. You give your decision there, in your own time.

  • An itemised pro forma

If you choose an option, a pro forma with every service and the payment details is prepared. You see in writing what you pay for.

The report does not mean treatment has been accepted. The doctors in Cuba decide on eligibility; whether to go ahead is entirely your decision.

  • Its own biotechnology

Products developed and licensed in Cuba.

  • Experienced specialists

Specialists read your file completely, in their own language.

  • International patient experience

Frequently asked questions

Questions you may have

How much is the preliminary review fee and what does it cover?

The current fee is shown during the application. It covers checking your documents, translating them into Spanish, the review of your file by a specialist in Cuba and explaining the opinion to you. For card payments, the processing fee is shown separately on the payment screen.

Is the fee refunded if the doctor finds treatment unsuitable?

Not once your file has been sent to the doctor. The preliminary review fee pays for the specialist's review of your file, not for acceptance for treatment, so it is not refunded whether the doctor's opinion is positive or negative. If you withdraw after paying but before your file is sent to the doctor, the fee is refunded. If the doctor asks for more documents during the review, there is no extra charge. To withdraw, simply write to info@cubahealthassist.com with your file number; our finance team will handle your request.

How long does the specialist opinion take?

If your documents are complete, our target for the first specialist review is about 4 business days. If the doctor asks for more documents, it may take longer. We keep you updated at every step.

Can a relative apply for the patient?

Yes, most applications are made by relatives. Contact details are taken from the applicant, and all updates go to the applicant.

My reports are not in Spanish. Do I need a translation?

You do not need to do anything. We translate your documents into Spanish, and the doctor's opinion is explained to you in your language.

Do I have to travel to Cuba?

No. Your file is first reviewed remotely. After hearing the doctor's opinion, you decide whether to travel.

Does applying mean the treatment is accepted?

Applying means your file is reviewed by a specialist. Eligibility for treatment and the treatment plan are decided by the doctors in Cuba.

Do you help with visa, flights and accommodation?

If you decide on treatment, we help coordinate the invitation letter, flight dates, accommodation near the hospital and airport pick-up. Scope and any fee are confirmed to you in writing. Visa decisions are made by the relevant consulate or authority; we cannot promise the outcome. We help you with the invitation letter and the documents required.

Will my insurance pay for treatment?

That depends on your insurer and your policy. The best way is to speak directly to your own private insurance company. Documents your insurer may ask for, such as the doctor's report and the pro forma, are in your patient portal.

Is my information safe?

Your documents are uploaded over an encrypted connection and are seen only by the team and the doctor working on your file. The doctor's report and medical documents are not sent by WhatsApp; they are shared securely in the patient portal. Please upload medical documents through the secure application form or the patient portal, not in a chat.

What should I do in an emergency?

Cuba Health Assist's contact channels are not an emergency medical service. In an emergency, such as severe breathlessness, loss of consciousness, heavy bleeding, chest pain, a seizure, sudden weakness on one side of the body or thoughts of self-harm, call the local emergency number at once or go to the nearest emergency department: 112 in Türkiye, Spain, Germany and other EU countries, 911 in the US, 104 in Cuba, and the local emergency number anywhere else. A remote file review cannot replace emergency care.
