What the doctor checks

What does the doctor check first in Alzheimer's?

NeuralCIM is licensed for mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease. So the doctor first confirms the diagnosis and the stage, then checks whether the treatment can be given safely. These are the points they look for in your file.

  1. 01

    Diagnosis and stage

How the Alzheimer's diagnosis was made and whether the disease is mild, moderate or advanced. A neurology or psychiatry report shows this.

  2. 02

    Memory tests and daily life

Results of tests such as MMSE, MoCA or CDR, and how far the person manages meals, dressing, medicines and money alone. Older results show the trend.

  3. 03

    Brain scans and other causes

A brain MRI or CT report. The doctor also rules out other causes of memory loss: vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid problems, depression or vascular damage.

  4. 04

Blood pressure, heart and blood count

High blood pressure, heart disease and haemoglobin. The licence asks for these to be monitored. Every medicine and supplement taken matters too.

Alzheimer's in Cuba

What can you expect from the review in Cuba?

Neurologists in Cuba review your file in line with internationally accepted approaches to diagnosing and treating Alzheimer's disease. The doctor checks that the diagnosis and stage match the records, looks at the current treatment and assesses whether NeuralCIM may suit your loved one.

NeuralCIM does not replace the Alzheimer’s medicines your loved one already takes; the doctor considers it alongside current treatment. The doctor reviewing your file decides whether treatment starts in Cuba, where the first dose and the family training take place and how the medicine is supplied. We send you this plan in writing.

Research and safety

What does the research on NeuralCIM show?

The points below summarise the official Cuban product information (CECMED) and studies published in peer-reviewed journals. On the ADAS-Cog scale a falling score means improvement and a rising score means decline.

  1. 01

ATHENEA trial: one year against placebo

170 people with mild or moderate Alzheimer's (average age 74) received the medicine or a placebo for 48 weeks. ADAS-Cog improved by 3 and 4 points in the NeuralCIM groups and worsened by 4 points with placebo, a difference of 7 to 8 points. 85% of patients completed treatment. Double-blind, phase II/III; Alzheimer's Research & Therapy, 2023.

  2. 02

Longer follow-up: two and three years

In patients who continued treatment, ADAS-Cog improved by 6 points at week 96 and 9 points at week 144, while it worsened by 11 and 18 points in a comparison group that never received it. MoCA, behaviour (NPI) and daily-living scales also differed. This part is an observational follow-up; Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, 2025.

  3. 03

    Phase III study in Cuba

A multicentre, open-label, single-group study enrolled 616 patients; there was no placebo group. After one year, ADAS-Cog stayed the same or improved in 61.9% of the patients assessed. Side effects were few.

  4. 04

    Licence status

The Cuban regulator CECMED granted the licence on 28 July 2025 on the basis of these results. It is conditional: results of confirmatory studies are awaited. Treatment should be supervised by a specialist experienced in Alzheimer's disease. It has no US (FDA) or European Union (EMA) approval.

FAQ

Questions families often ask

Can NeuralCIM cure Alzheimer's disease?

No. There is no treatment yet that removes Alzheimer's disease. In the studies, memory scores of patients on NeuralCIM were on average maintained or improved, and the response varies from person to person. The doctor reviewing your file can tell you what to expect for your loved one.

Can it be given at home, and how long would we stay in Cuba?

According to the licence, no hospital stay is needed. The first dose is given under the supervision of a health professional; after training, a family member can continue the treatment at home. It is given three times a week on alternate days for at least one year. The doctor reviewing your file decides where treatment starts and how the medicine is supplied.

Do they need to stop their Alzheimer's medicines?

No, never stop a medicine on your own. Patients in the studies kept taking their blood pressure, diabetes and depression medicines. Only zinc sulphate is known to reduce the effect of NeuralCIM. The doctor reviews the full medication plan with you.

Can we apply for advanced Alzheimer's or another type of dementia?

Yes, you can. The licence covers mild and moderate Alzheimer's; in advanced disease or in vascular, Lewy body or frontotemporal dementia NeuralCIM may not be suitable. Your file still goes to a specialist in Cuba, who gives you a clear opinion.

How much is the preliminary review fee and what does it cover?

The current fee is shown during the application. It covers checking your documents, translating them into Spanish, the review of your file by a specialist in Cuba and explaining the opinion to you. For card payments, the processing fee is shown separately on the payment screen.

Is the fee refunded if the doctor finds treatment unsuitable?

Not once your file has been sent to the doctor. The preliminary review fee pays for the specialist's review of your file, not for acceptance for treatment, so it is not refunded whether the doctor's opinion is positive or negative. If you withdraw after paying but before your file is sent to the doctor, the fee is refunded. If the doctor asks for more documents during the review, there is no extra charge. To withdraw, simply write to info@cubahealthassist.com with your file number; our finance team will handle your request.

How long does the specialist opinion take?

If your documents are complete, our target for the first specialist review is about 4 business days. If the doctor asks for more documents, it may take longer. We keep you updated at every step.

Can a relative apply for the patient?

Yes, most applications are made by relatives. Contact details are taken from the applicant, and all updates go to the applicant.

My reports are not in Spanish. Do I need a translation?

You do not need to do anything. We translate your documents into Spanish, and the doctor's opinion is explained to you in your language.

Do I have to travel to Cuba?

No. Your file is first reviewed remotely. After hearing the doctor's opinion, you decide whether to travel.

Are your reports ready?

The application takes about 10 minutes. If you would like to ask first, write to us on WhatsApp; we help in English, Spanish, German and Turkish.
